Your Words Have Power - Speak Life and Inspire
With the depression and suicide rate growing day by day, now more than ever, the world needs the Word. And not just any word, they need the Word of God. They need words that are alive and active, sharper than any two-edged sword (Heb 4:12). Words that encourage them and build them up (Eph 4:29). Words that speak life over them, not death (Prov 18:21).
People need to hear words that stir hope in their hearts, and that includes you and me. Yes, even we need to hear words of encouragement to press on to better days.
So how do we encourage ourselves and others in times of suffering?
We speak life!
We express gratitude, instead of complaints.
We quote scriptures, instead of bad thoughts and reports.
We compliment, instead of critiquing.
We talk about who God says we are, instead of who others say we are. We show kindness instead of contempt.
We change our language from negative to positive and we become intentional about every single thing we say because we realize that there is immense power in our words (Prov 18:21). I know that this is easier said than done.
I mean it's hard to express gratitude when you’ve just lost your job. It's hard to quote scriptures when you're in extreme pain and just found out you have cancer. It's hard to be kind to someone who is being anything but kind to others. It's hard to compliment someone who has insulted you. It's hard to talk about who God says you are when the opinions of others make sense to you. But it's important.
Speaking life over yourself and others is important because God wants only the best for His children. Here are some ideas on how to speak life over yourself and others:
Speaking life over others
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. - 1 Thess 5:11
Did you know that your words alone can break a person to the point of suicide? That's scary to even think about, especially if you lose your temper and say things you don't mean. However, on the flip side of that, there's good news as well, your words alone can stop someone that's on the brink of suicide. Your words have the power to literally save someone's life, that's how powerful they are.
For this reason, it’s important to go into each day with an intention to speak life, and only life. Let everything you say build people up instead of breaking them down.
You can ensure you're doing this by:
- Giving Godly (scriptural) advice
- Complimenting them
- Expressing your gratitude for them
- Expressing your love and/or care
- Imagining yourself in their situation before saying anything
Speaking life over yourself
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. - James 4:7
Being Christian does not exempt us from suffering, in fact, the enemy tries to attack us even more. This is why we need to speak life over ourselves as much as we do for others.
Speaking life over yourself isn’t always easy, especially if you've had a tough time for a long time, you have a negative view of yourself, or you don’t know your identity in Christ.
Your identity in Christ is who you truly are, it's who God created you to be and it cannot be changed. The lies of the enemy will always try to convince you otherwise, but that is the very reason you need to affirm your identity.
Affirming who God says you are every day will ensure that you don't forget it when the lies creep in. So today, choose to speak life over yourself by saying the following "I Am Affirmations" out loud:
I am brave
I am bold
I am blessed
I am strong
I am loved
I am found
I am chosen
As you say these words, remember that they are all absolute truth because they come directly from the Word of God. Also, remember that the words you speak over your life today are seeds and you will grow from the seeds you planted. So from now on, plant only good ones.
