The history of the Shofar (/ʃoʊˈfɑːr/ shoh-FAR; from Hebrew: שׁוֹפָר, pronounced [ʃoˈfaʁ]) dates back many thousands of years. It is a Jewish musical instrument usually made from a hollowed ram, sheep, or goat horn. It was blown in warfare (such as in the Battle of Jericho) and is traditionally blown during the High Holy Days. It has also been blown as a call for repentance, to gather an assembly, and for praise and proclamation. In more contemporary times, Christians have also come to recognize the Shofar as a tool that can awaken souls to spiritual truth. It is not uncommon, in a number of Christian circles, for the Shofar to be blown not just in recognition of the ancient heritage of their faith, but also as a declaration of victory with a view toward the return of the Messiah.
